Water, critical for Pecan Production

Water, specifically from Hurricane Helene, is causing devastation across much of the Southeast U.S. While we feel for the many dealing with the destruction from the hurricane and floods, the water has proven to be a blessing for our pecan orchard near Keo, Arkansas.   Water is critical for pecan trees in their final stages of growth, about August through October. Adequate water helps nuts properly fill out and initiate shuck split. After the steady rains in August & September, the early varieties of pecans, Pawnee and Kanza, started to have shuck split. This means, harvest time is approaching.

Some years, the rain isn’t as cooperative at this phase of growth. In those times, we are thankful for our irrigation system.  If nature doesn’t continue providing adequate rain for the later ripening varieties, we will irrigate as necessary in order to produce the high quality, well-filled out pecans that Baucum Nut House is known to sell.
